Afghan breakdancer Manizha Talash disqualified from Paris Olympics for political message on cape
Afghan refugee breakdancer, Manizha Talash, has been disqualified from the Paris Olympic Games after displaying a cape with the message “Free Afghan Women” on Friday, officials said. Talash was disqualified for displaying a political slogan on her attire, as per the World DanceSport Federation.
In a bold move, Talash wore a cape with the message written in white while competing against Dutch player India Sardjoe. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) regulations prohibit any form of demonstration or political propaganda in Olympic sites. Talash’s actions have led to further review by the IOC Disciplinary Commission.
Originally from Afghanistan, Talash fled to Spain in 2021 following the Taliban’s takeover. She was the only female breakdancer in Kabul’s “Superiors Crew.” Talash decided to leave Afghanistan to pursue her dream of breaking, a style that made its Olympic debut at the Paris Games this year.
