Action Needed: UK Sport Chair Acknowledges Team GB’s Golden Success

Team GB’s gold medal haul at the Paris 2024 Olympics has left UK Sport chair Katherine Grainger admitting that there is “work to do”. Despite securing 65 medals, with a target of 50-70 set before the games, the low number of gold medals won is a concern for the Olympic funding agency. With just 14 golds secured, the team’s lowest return since Athens 2004, there is a need to review and improve in order to achieve strategic ambitions.

Grainger acknowledges that Team GB finished seventh in the medal table, dropping three spots from the previous Games and emphasizes the importance of converting more medals to gold. After underperforming at Tokyo 2020, Team GB’s rowers won eight medals in Paris, including three golds, showcasing a significant improvement.

Moving forward, many sports will be waiting to see how their performance in Paris affects their funding for the next Olympic cycle. Grainger highlights the example of rowing, where investment is based on the potential of a sport rather than immediate results. Through strategic planning and assessment, British Rowing was able to turn around their performance and achieve success in Paris.
