Dhaka: The interim government of Bangladesh has decided to cancel the national holiday on August 15, which marks the assassination of the country’s founder, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who was also the father of deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. This decision was approved during a meeting of the Advisory Council held today, as per a press release from the Chief Advisor’s Office. The official notification announcing the cancellation of the holiday was issued on Tuesday.
The decision to cancel the holiday came after discussions with various political parties, excluding the Awami League. Some parties were in favor of keeping August 15 as a national holiday, while others opposed the idea.
Following the assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, a angry mob set fire to a museum dedicated to him, which was originally his private residence. This tragic event occurred on August 15, 1975, when he and his family members were killed in a military coup led by a group of junior officers. At the time, Hasina, along with her two minor children and younger sister Sheikh Rehana, were in Germany for a short visit.
