Arshad Nadeem Dominates Tokyo Olympics with Gold Record

World-renowned athlete Neeraj Chopra clinched the silver medal in the men’s javelin throw final at Paris 2024 in the wee hours of Friday. Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem made history by securing a gold medal with an Olympic record-breaking throw.

Chopra displayed his prowess with a season-best throw of 89.45 meters. Despite some fouls in his first, third, fourth, and fifth attempts, the 26-year-old left a mark on the competition.

On the other hand, Nadeem emerged as the first Pakistani athlete to snatch an individual gold medal at the Olympics with an outstanding throw of 92.97m. He also impressed with a massive throw of 91.79m in his final attempt, surpassing the previous Olympic record set by Andreas Thorkildsen of Norway in Beijing 2008.

In the qualifying round, Chopra’s first throw measured 89.34m. The Tokyo 2020 gold medalist’s personal best stands at 89.94m, achieved in 2022.

Securing the silver medal, Chopra became the fourth Indian in independent India to claim two medals in individual events. At Paris 2024, shooter Manu Bhaker bagged two bronze medals, while badminton player PV Sindhu won silver in Rio 2016 and bronze in Tokyo 2020. Wrestler Sushil Kumar has also contributed to India’s medal tally with a bronze and silver in Beijing 2008 and London 2012, respectively.

India currently occupies the 63rd position in the medal standings with a total of five medals, including three bronze in shooting and one in men’s hockey.
