Jacob Bridgeman made a strong start at the 3M Open, shooting an eight-under 63 to take a one-shot lead in the first round. Unfortunately, Open Championship runner-up Billy Horschel had to withdraw from the tournament due to illness. Bridgeman, who has missed his last three cuts on the PGA Tour, showed great form by carding nine birdies and a solitary bogey, including a chip-in from the bunker for a gain at his 17th hole.
The 24-year-old golfer is currently ahead by a stroke, with Mackenzie Hughes close behind. Other players like Patrick Rodgers, Andrew Novak, and Martin Trainer are all a shot further back on six under at TPC Twin Cities. Sahith Theegala, the highest-ranked player in the event, is also in the mix with a solid round of five under without any blemishes.
Horschel, ranked 33rd in the world, expressed his disappointment at not being able to compete after his excellent performance at Royal Troon. He cited feeling unwell with a fever and locked-up muscles, preventing him from being in top form to play.
