Discover the powerful bond of art and nature at Meadowbrook Nature Preserve

Art and nature unite at Meadowbrook Nature Preserve with weaving, painting, and hikes. From preschoolers to older adults, everyone gathered for this unique experience on a Saturday morning. The event, called “Weaving Through Waterways”, attracted a diverse crowd at the Valparaiso location, which is part of the larger Shirley Heinze Land Trust. The event was filled with guided nature walks, plein air painting, and creative projects based on weaving.

Participants had the opportunity to create woven bracelets, keychains, turtles, and wall hangings using colorful yarn and beads. The atmosphere was lively and engaging, with families and friends immersing themselves in the natural beauty of the preserve. Artists like Anita Phillips showcased their work, while volunteer naturalists led informative nature walks through the scenic woodlands.

The event, organized by the Art Barn School of Art and the Chesterton Art Center, highlighted the importance of conservation and artistic expression. As visitors explored the trails and participated in hands-on activities, they discovered the rich biodiversity of the area. From native trees like tulip and sassafras to invasive species like round-leaved bittersweet, there was much to learn about the delicate balance of ecosystems.

Shirley Heinze Land Trust’s dedication to preserving and restoring natural lands across Northwest Indiana was evident throughout the event. With over 3,400 acres under their care, the trust continues to make a significant impact on the region’s environmental sustainability. As participants weaved, painted, and hiked, they became part of a community that values art, nature, and conservation.
