Special Olympics’ research and evaluation (R&E) play a crucial role in supporting Special Olympics’ global health strategy by measuring health outcomes from health programs and providing technical assistance for monitoring and evaluation to country and state Special Olympics Programs. In this episode of Inclusion Revolution Radio, host Novie Craven chatted with Dr. Alicia Dixon-Ibarra, Director of Fitness and Health Research at Special Olympics, along with athlete leaders Kimberly Schickley and Allen Tobin, about the significance of inclusive health research.
Schickley and Tobin are part of the Athlete Advisory Board, supporting the Special Olympics Inclusive Health Longitudinal Evaluation, known as Project ALL STAR. ALL STAR stands for “Active Life and Longevity: Special Olympics Transforming Athlete Results.” Through Project ALL STAR, athlete co-researchers undergo inclusive research training to gain insights into inclusive research and play a vital role in shaping the evaluation. They receive specialized research ethics training designed for adults with intellectual disabilities, ensuring they are ready for research involvement. Board members contribute by sharing their opinions on study materials and recruitment information. As co-researchers in inclusive health research, athletes provide feedback and present evaluation findings to promote Project ALL STAR.
Join us in this episode to learn more about how Special Olympics athletes are revolutionizing inclusive health research.
