Grant Hill Shares Excitement Over Derrick White Joining Team USA

Team USA found itself with an open spot on its roster on Wednesday when they decided to send Kawhi Leonard back home due to a knee injury.

Many big-name players were considered to fill that spot, such as Jaylen Brown. However, Grant Hill, the managing director of USA Basketball, opted to go in a different direction and selected Brown’s Celtics teammate Derrick White.

Hill shared his thoughts on choosing White to join the 12-player Olympic team, emphasizing White’s selfless playing style alongside stars like Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum with the Celtics.

“It’s a mix of emotions, but we are excited to have Derrick White on board,” Hill told reporters. “I have always been a fan of Derrick’s game, especially after he won a championship. What stands out to me about Derrick is his ability to adapt and play his role effectively, whether with the Celtics or now with Team USA. He excels at being a supportive teammate, a stellar defensive player, and a clutch shooter, all contributing to winning games.”

Hill mentioned that White will not be joining the team in Las Vegas for training camp but will meet them in Abu Dhabi for their first practice on Saturday.

White had a standout season with the Celtics, posting career-high numbers in points, assists, and rebounds per game, while also being recognized for his defensive skills. Now, after playing a crucial role in winning an NBA title, White has the opportunity to pursue a gold medal with Team USA.
