Horschel dominates British Open in challenging weather at Royal Troon

TROON, Scotland – On a wild day of rain and big numbers at Royal Troon, Billy Horschel’s short sleeves in the chill and his brilliant short game somehow managed to hold on for a 2-under 69, giving him a one-shot lead in the British Open. The game turned upside down and every other possible way on Saturday as the rain started before the leading players teed off and only got stronger. The wind was relentless, challenging the players on the tough back nine. This left even the world’s best players struggling to make par, with some having to hit fairway metals into par 4s and still not reaching the green.

Dustin Johnson, a former world No. 1 with two majors, described the back nine as the hardest in golf right now. Despite the challenging conditions, Horschel was up to the task, making marvellous par saves from the rough and pot bunkers down the stretch.

On the other hand, Shane Lowry, a previous winner at Royal Portrush, couldn’t keep up. Starting with a three-shot lead, Lowry fell apart and finished the day three shots behind after playing the final 11 holes in 7 over par.

Thriston Lawrence of South Africa made a remarkable turnaround with a 65, going from 10 shots behind to playing in the final group with Horschel, just one shot back. Sam Burns and Russell Henley were also only one shot behind after shooting 65 and 66 respectively.

Horschel, with a 4-under 209 score, will be heading into Sunday with his first-ever 54-hole lead in a major tournament. He faces tough competition from Xander Schauffele, who shot 69, and Justin Rose at 73, both one shot behind.

The race is on for the British Open title at Royal Troon, with a wide-open leaderboard and the opportunity for any player within six shots to make a move. Stay updated with all the latest news and updates on Live Mint and download The Mint News App for daily market updates and live business news.
