NEW DELHI: India’s largest airline IndiGo (InterGlobe Aviation Ltd), which has always been known for offering low-cost all-economy seats, is now introducing ‘IndiGo Stretch’ business class. The airline, which was established in 2006 with an initial fleet of 100 aircraft, now boasts a fleet of over 380 aircraft and plans to acquire more than 970 aircraft in the next decade. Rahul Bhatia, the airline’s founder and managing director, shared insights about IndiGo’s growth and future plans in expanding its operations to include long-haul flights and business class amenities.

Bhatia, a graduate in electrical engineering from the University of Waterloo, began his journey in air transport management with InterGlobe in 1989 before co-founding IndiGo with Rakesh Gangwal in 2006. Despite the partnership ending in 2019, with Gangwal resigning from the board, Bhatia continues to lead InterGlobe Enterprises as IndiGo’s largest shareholder. With a recent stake sale, the promoter group, led by Bhatia, now holds a 35.91% share in the airline. Addressing concerns about reduced shareholding, Bhatia assured that InterGlobe remains committed to the success of IndiGo.

In a candid conversation, Bhatia reflected on IndiGo’s journey, from navigating financial crises to overcoming challenges posed by the pandemic. He emphasized that despite introducing new services like business class, IndiGo will always maintain its status as a low-cost airline, focused on providing customers with the best value. Bhatia also highlighted the importance of having a strong cost structure and building a unique culture within the organization to drive success in the competitive aviation industry.

Looking ahead, Bhatia sees IndiGo playing a crucial role in the Indian aviation ecosystem, particularly in expanding international connectivity and bringing economic benefits back to the country. With a positive outlook on the future, Bhatia is confident that IndiGo, along with other Indian airlines, will seize opportunities to enhance the country’s presence in the global aviation market.
