Three Celtics from Boston are currently participating in the Paris Olympics, with only two of them getting playing time in the opening game for Team USA.
Jayson Tatum, along with Tyrese Haliburton, did not get a chance to step on the court during the 110-84 victory against Serbia. This came as a surprise since Tatum had been playing consistently in the lead-up matches before the Olympics. Despite starting in three of those games and playing at least 14 minutes in each, Tatum didn’t see any action in the opener.
There were speculations that Tatum was benched due to illness, but he clarified to The Boston Globe that he was feeling fine and not sick. It remains a mystery why he was kept out of the game.
As for the Celtics who did play, Jrue Holiday had a strong performance with the third-highest minutes and points for Team USA. Derrick White also contributed with a couple of points, steals, rebounds, assists, and blocks off the bench.
Team USA will continue their group-stage journey with a match against South Sudan on Wednesday at 3 p.m. ET.
