Smith was born Mary Ann Scherer in Chicago and grew up on the Northwest Side. She was a graduate of Regina Dominican High School and later earned a degree from Mundelein College. Before entering politics, Smith worked in the art department of Encyclopedia Britannica and at the Lake Michigan Federation, where she advocated for clean water.
In her time as alderman, Smith was instrumental in bringing in over $90 million worth of investments into the ward’s schools, improving public transit, and championing environmental sustainability projects. She was also a strong advocate for historic preservation and community art projects, working to create several vibrant historic districts and murals in the ward.
Smith’s legacy as an alderman is remembered for her kindness, sincerity, and love for the community. She prioritized listening to her constituents and involving them in decision-making processes. After retiring from politics in 2011, Smith continued to work on environmental issues.
Mary Ann Smith’s funeral service will be held on Friday, Aug. 23, at Saint Ita Church in Chicago. A celebration of life service is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 26, at Loyola University Chicago.
