Challenges Faced by Taxpayers in Filing ITR
As the due date for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) approaches, many taxpayers in India are encountering significant difficulties on the tax filing portal. Recent surveys have shown that almost half of the taxpayers have not yet completed their ITR filing.
Current Statistics on ITR Filing
According to the latest survey, 49% of taxpayers have not filed their ITRs until now. The challenges faced during the filing process have been a major hindrance for many individuals.
Hurdles Encountered During Filing
It has been revealed that 33% of taxpayers have experienced or are likely to face challenges during the filing process. A significant 11% have expressed concerns about not being able to complete the filing before the deadline of 31st July.
Major Issues Identified
One of the main reasons behind these issues is the difficulty in accessing necessary documents, as reported by 16% of taxpayers. Additionally, 14% of assesses have highlighted issues raised by Chartered Accountants (CAs), while a substantial 38% have reported issues with the filing portal itself.
Common issues include login failures, unresponsive pages, timeouts, problems with pre-filled data, and difficulties in uploading large files. Reports also suggest errors in calculations for capital gains and foreign income tax, as well as issues with post-submission filings.
Efforts for Resolution
Various organizations, including the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India and the Karnataka State Chartered Accountants Association, have written to the Income Tax Department urging swift resolution of these problems. They have proposed extending the deadline for filing income tax returns to mid-to-late August to relieve the burden on taxpayers.
