Former Pakistan captain Basit Ali criticises BCCI for reported refusal to play CT 2025
Former cricketer Basit Ali expressed disappointment over India’s reported hesitation to play in Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. In a passionate discussion on his YouTube channel, Basit called out other international cricket boards for blindly following the directives of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Discussing the issue, Basit highlighted how a few boards seem to just nod along with whatever Jay Shah, the BCCI secretary, dictates. He emphasized that if Shah suggested holding the tournament in Pakistan or proposed a hybrid model for the event, everyone would simply fall in line.
Addressing the rumors of a potential India vs Pakistan series at a neutral site, Basit firmly believes that Pakistan should decline any such proposal. He stressed that if India is not willing to play in Pakistan, then Pakistan should also reject the idea of playing in a third country.
Basit Ali’s remarks come in the wake of reports suggesting that India may skip the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy due to safety concerns in Pakistan. With the BCCI exploring the option of requesting ICC to host India’s matches in a different country, the situation remains uncertain.
Notably, this scenario mirrors the 2023 Asia Cup situation where matches involving India were moved to Sri Lanka due to their reluctance to play in Pakistan. Despite these challenges, India emerged victorious in both the matches against Pakistan and went on to clinch the Asia Cup title by defeating Sri Lanka in the final.
Political tensions have kept India from playing in Pakistan for over a decade, with the last bilateral series taking place in 2012-13. India and Pakistan have since come face to face only in ACC and ICC tournaments.
