Viacom18 set to become top sports destination in India with IPL digital media rights

With the acquisition of the digital media rights of IPL, Viacom-18 is all set to become the top sports destination in India. Viacom18 will not only stream every IPL match online over the next 5 years (from 2023 to 2027) but will also broadcast top sports leagues from across the world, including the NBA and La Liga. This TV network on Tuesday made a successful bid of Rs 20,500 crore for Package B (Digital Media) of IPL Media Rights. This is Rs 50 crore per match for 410 matches.

Globally, Viacom18 has won the TV as well as digital rights in 3 out of 5 international regions, including major cricketing countries. This reputed network also bought Package C with a bid of Rs 3,273 crore. This amount is Rs 33.24 crore per IPL match for 98 matches.

monopoly is over

With this new deal, the monopoly of any one broadcaster in IPL media rights will also end. Sony had acquired the rights for the first 10 years (2008-17) by paying Rs 8200 crore while Star won it for the next 5 years by making a successful bid of 16347.50. Now Viacom18 has acquired the digital rights.

Includes even free-dish

With this, Viacom18 is all set to take IPL streaming to over 60 million free-dish homes. Viacom18 has also bought IPL TV and digital rights for major overseas markets including Australia, England, Caribbean countries and South Africa.
